The following days were uneventful in comparison to Wednesday. Everything was normal as life went on. But now that it was Friday, all Will could think about was if Warren would come out to the youth group or not. Did everything that happened in the storage room have any effect on reality? Only time would tell.

All the usual people were present when Will arrived. A couple of kids were playing football in the parking lot, but Will had no interest. Instead, he talked to Steven and Albert; he even showed up earlier than usual. When Maryland arrived, she and Will locked eyes for a split second, but he quickly looked away.

Eventually, the youth pastor called everyone to take their seats and Warren still hadn’t shown. They began with some praise and worship. Halfway into it, Will heard the door open and in walked Warren Carter who sat beside him in the back. Something was different in Will that night; he poured his heart into the songs of praise. There was a certain joy in the air that he couldn’t explain.

At the end of worship, the youth pastor got back up and announced that there would be a youth retreat in a couple of weeks. Despite everybody else, Will had mixed feelings on the matter. He would be trapped in a cabin with a bunch of people he never really talked to.

The message that night was about forgiveness and how people need to learn to forgive themselves. The pastor read the story about King Manasseh of Judah, who was an absolutely corrupt king. He worshiped idols, sacrificed his children, desecrated the Lord’s temple, and even dabbled in sorcery. But one day the Assyrian armies attacked and captured Manasseh. They held him prisoner and it was there that he finally realized his wrongdoing. Manasseh asked for forgiveness from God, turning his life around for the better.

“If a man this evil could be forgiven, then why can’t you forgive yourself?” the pastor asked in his message.

Will looked over at Warren at one point, and he could see that this was having an effect on him. He could see that behind those eyes his mind was at war with itself. What the result would be was the real question at hand.

The pastor had an altar call, but Will didn’t feel he needed to go up. However, he noticed Warren did need to. When everybody said amen in unison, the tension in the air from the message lifted and everyone began talking amongst themselves.

“Thanks for coming out tonight,” Will said to Warren as he returned to his seat.

“Thank you for inviting me. I really needed this.”

Will and Warren both stayed seated as they continued to talk. “Where’s Melanie?” Will asked.

“I found a babysitter.” Warren still had a serious look on his face, clearly deep in thought.

“What got you to come tonight?”

“Because you were so adamant when you invited me.” A heavy silence fell upon the two until Warren heaved a deep sigh before speaking again. “I have a confession to make, Will.
